Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap

HKAPA, Lyric Theatre Tue Oct 9-Sun Oct 14

A murder mystery, shrouded in intrigue, wrapped in lies and deception… and dipped in a healthy dose of humour. After every performance of Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap, the world’s longest running show, you’re guaranteed to hear people boast that they knew who did it all along. Rewind to intermission and you’ll find an entire audience animatedly sifting through the clues in Christie’s timeless murder mystery.

At Monkswell Manor, Mr and Mrs Ralston are preparing for their debut round of guests. What they receive is by no means what they’d bargained for, with each of the six strangers adding their own unique brand of baggage to the mix. Before long, the blizzard outside has this eclectic bunch snowed in. Then there’s the announcement of a murder – and a police sergeant turns up on skis to point the finger of blame. All the ingredients of a classic Christie tale of who dun it.

The master of misdirection and surprise, Christie’s signature style leaves audiences so turned around that they could almost imagine they themselves had played a role in the murder. Opening on the West End, London, in 1952, The Mousetrap’s 60-year uninterrupted run is proof that Christie blends the morbid subject of murder and humour in a way that nobody else has been able to do. It’s a winning formula that leaves audiences torn between their affections for Christie’s colourful characters – and their pride-driven need to solve the crime and nail the killer.
