Top spots to enjoy the great outdoors with your kids...

Sai Kung Swimming Pool
More like a mini water park than a main pool, Sai Kung's LCSD pool features colourful slides galore, as well as a teaching pool and a fun children's pool. This is the perfect way to entertain the kids on the sweltering summer days in Hong Kong! Of course, there are plenty of other pools dotted across the city – see the website for more.

Kayak and Hike
This company brings you on a Geo Park kayaking junk trip, snorkelling and hiking. They cater to children and organise trips particularly accessible for the young ones – great for families looking to get the whole pack out on the water!
Sai Kung Town Waterfront, Sai Kung, 9300 5197; kayak-and-hike.com. $700-$800 per person.

Victoria Peak Garden

Pack a picnic, some toys and a few games and head to this oft-forgotten haven away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Take the tram up to The Peak and walk from there to Victoria Peak Garden where you can stop at Mount Austin Playground on the way.
40 Mount Austin Rd, The Peak.

Sun Yat Sen Memorial Park

This waterfront park facing Victoria Harbour has an abundance of soft green grass for kids to run and dance around on. Even if it rains, there's an indoor swimming pool and kids play area just next door, meaning it's a weather-proof afternoon of fun. But really, it's all about the grass. There's no better patch in the city.
18 Eastern St N, Sai Ying Pun, 2858 2493; lcsd.gov.hk/parks.

Kadoorie Farm & Botanic Garden

Founded in 1956 to provide aid to poor local farmers, this is perfect for a family day out. Wander through the vegetable gardens, greenhouses filled with plants and flowers and see all the animals – this place has wild boar, pigs, flamingos and even an owl sanctuary.
Lam Kam Rd, Tai Po, New Territories, 2483 7200; kfbg.org.hk. $100 for kids, $250 for adults, free for children under five.

To Big Wave Bay

This beautifully scenic route is ideal for families hiking with the little ones. It is one of the least strenuous hikes in Hong Kong – and with the heat of the summer hitting hard, has the added advantage of being covered for large portions and ending at the gorgeous (and kid-friendly) Big Wave Bay.
