Love (Of Any Kind) Shows

“Although love comes in many forms, love itself is universal.” With this philosophy in mind, photographer Samuel Lee brings an unconventional yet enlightening photo exhibition to Hong Kong called Love Shows, focusing on gay and lesbian couples. The exhibition aims to show the emotions of  often negatively stigmatised couples to the general public. “They are like other people, they have love, they have passion” says Bryan Chan, co-organiser of this exhibition. By using only real Asian gay and lesbian couples as the subject, the exhibition seeks to be a visual reminder that such couples exist in Asia and they too should be allowed to express their emotions freely.

In the exhibition, Lee, a photographer who has had works  published in New York’s Spoon Magazine as well as at the London Blue Flower Exhibition, looks to reveal the delicate and touching relationships between his subjects as well as the individual personalities of women and men who love themselves. The organisers also hope to have different sectors of the community participate in this event so that the message is as far-reaching as possible. Running from September 15 to 29 at Central’s Culture Club, the exhibition features Thai actress Tina Jittaleela, who will also be making an appearance on the first day of the show. Her movie, Yes or No was a hit at the Hong Kong Lesbian & Gay Film Festival this year and she has just finished its sequel.

With a sensitive topic such as sexuality and love being so boldly presented, we can be quite sure that this exhibition will do both the organisers and the gay and lesbian community some serious good.
