XXX re-opens and Premium Club launches

Basement-loving clubbers have had a pretty rough time of it since club XXX shut its doors back in March. That’s all about to change though, as a revamped and relocated XXX is finally opening later this month in Sai Wan. What’s more, a brand new indie club, Premium, is opening up in the Wing Lok Street space that XXX used to inhabit.

DJ Enso, founder of XXX, tells us that the move has been a busy time for the crew, but it couldn’t have come at a better time. Along with a recent doubling of the club’s former rent, Enso also appreciates that after two years of operation, it was high time to switch it up. “Everyone knows that in Hong Kong, [two years] is the time when things get old and start to decay. We need to stay fresh and keep XXX moving,” he says. “Sheung Wan is already getting a bit worn out with all tourists these days. With the new MTR extension [in Sai Wan] opening next year, we will see that neighbourhood turn it up.”

Some XXX fans were worried that the club might change its feel and ethic, but Enso confirms that there’s nothing to worry about: “It’s still very much got the same basement vibe. Our DJ booth is similar to before, and now we’ve added a larger stage for live bands. We have also doubled the sound system. Expect a lot of concrete!” The club will no longer operate a BYOB policy, but luckily LKF prices won’t be in force. As Enso puts it: “We will keep it chill... obviously we are going to keep our drink prices low.” We are also pleased to report that toilets are built inside the new club – a welcome change indeed!

But what about Premium, which is opening in the old XXX basement venue? There has been confusion over the relationship between the two clubs, but they are in fact completely independent ventures.

French DJ and events organiser Lucas Luraka, previously the force behind Dandy in Central, is the founder of Premium. Luraka explains: “ The name ‘Premium’ is a joke between friends in response to all these ‘bling bling’ clubs you find around. The concept of the club is based on recycled furniture and vintage decoration items from flea markets, or stuff that I found in my garage in France.” Aside from the vintage vibe, the music will be a focus at this new space.” Luraka continues: “We’ll have mainly quality dance music on weekends – we could go from disco to northern soul to German industrial, post-punk to Italo to electro or acid house… you can expect a super random variety. One thing is for sure – you will not hear ‘LKF Top 40’ at Premium!”

Aside from dancing and drinking, Premium is also set to host art events and screenings, as well as a flea market on Sundays. Don’t forget to bring some beers – the club is operating a BYOB policy.

We’re certainly looking forward to getting our fix of basement this month. Long live concrete!
