Taking rhythm and flow right down to the soul is what 44-year-old musician Osunlade is all about. Besides being an established deep house artist, Osunlade is also a priest of Yourba (also the name of his own record label), a religion that comes from south western Nigeria. Its basic tenets are a harmonious relationship with nature and the goal of transcending into the spiritual realm. So, a bit like a healthy intake of peyote while looking into an open fire.

Osunlade dishes up hot and definitely spicy sounds that deviate from your typical electro house music. An added jungle and tribal element, with groovy synths layered over preaching vocals, can be heard, such as in his hit tracks Envision and My Reflection. Not all are like that though. Take Beloved for example – a smooth and groovy deep house track with a layer of bongo and drum mixed with airy vocals. But no matter how Osunlade wants to spin the mood, his sound is infectious and his diverse range has caught the attention of major R'n'B and soul superstars like John Legend, Jill Scott, Patti Labelle, Eric Benet, and Musiq Soulchild – who've all collaborated with Osunlade.

Osunlade's success hasn't stopped there. He has been able to come out with 14 albums – his most recent being A Man With No Past Originating The Future – and a heap of remixes, which has had him dubbed the 'messiah of ancestral house'. If you're looking to stray away from the typical club beats this fortnight, try a spiritually uplifting and soul-elevating experience with Osunlade while marvelling at his striking appearance – think what Mr T would look like if he found Zion.
