Fuck Buttons feat. Andrew Hung

When you listen to Fuck Buttons for the first time (just after you’ve repeated their name over and over for exaggerated effect), you find yourself unravelling layers of complex sounds. The more you listen, the more you attempt to pinpoint the core of the British duo’s electronic vibe, which has, from time to time, been labelled ‘new noise’. It’s a push and pull between a primitive tribal sound and a droning, scratchy, synthy noise, mixed in with marching band beats. It’s like a raw, metallic battlecry that gets the blood pumping and the heart racing – which is probably why hit singles Surf Solar and Olympians were chosen to feature in the opening ceremony of last year’s London Olympics. It was a big deal for the boys and showed how far they’d come in eight years.

Before their Olympic rise to fame, though, Andrew Hung and BenjamIn Power were just a couple of students at art school in Bristol, England. They met and their musical energies immediately matched, so they formed Fuck Buttons in 2004. Together they took their influences from Aphex Twin and Mogwai, and created a pretty unique sound by experimenting with unconventional gadgets like an old school Casiotone keyboard and a Fisher Price karaoke set. Their DIY vibe caught on with the indie kids and, in 2007, the duo was signed by ATP Recordings. Their debut album Street Horrrsing in 2008 received rave reviews and the same went for their 2009 sophomore album Tarot Sport. Then they started to tour with other indie sensations like Caribou. The scene
was set.

And it’s still setting. This fortnight the crew at Songs for Children presents a special DJ set by Hung, who headlines a night of ‘indietronica’. Powers won’t be here to join him but we expect no less of a blow-out performance from Hung. If you’re a fan of the duo then fuck whatever you had planned and Fuck Buttons instead. Well, half of it, anyway. Arthur Tam
