Lately we’ve heard the brostep stylings of Skrillex and the glittery house beats of Kaskade causing a frenzy of perspiring youths to jump up and down to crashing dance rhythms. But for those of us who are not into glass-shattering intensity, it’s refreshing to know that the smooth funky breakbeat sounds of French DJ Breakbot (born Thibaut Berland) are coming to town. Listening to Breakbot is like getting warped back to the good ole days of 70s disco. His sound is a combination of discoid funk, pop and soul with an additional layer of throwback vocals from guest vocalists like Irfane and Ruckazoid.

Growing up, the now 31-year-old DJ was – and still – is influenced by the likes of Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder and Jamiroquai – hence his strong soul and Motown sounds. Breakbot began his career in film before befriending the likes of Justice where he began remixing songs like the famed track Let There Be Light. With a series of remixes under his belt, Breakbot’s breakthrough came when he was picked up by music label Ed Banger Records and released the fresh and breezy beats of Fantasy and the groovy velvet sounds of Baby I’m Yours (probably his most popular single) in 2010, which also earned him a nomination at the UK Music Video Awards the very same year.

With much acclaim, Breakbot finally released his debut album By Your Side last summer, a hybrid sound of retro funk and modern pop. His track One Out of Two captures the light, catchy, clean, nostalgic tone of the 60s, accented by a crisp violin synth. It’s an infectious song that will surely please the crowds in Hong Kong when the long-haired, retro-funk Frenchman hits the stage for one of the last performances of his Asian tour. Arthur Tam
